PROGRAM FOR THE SECOND SESSION 5 MARCH
After our Saturday 26 March session on entrepreneurship I was further considering how to integrate in a best possible way your interests and needs with the fascinating subject of entrepreneurship. I have noted that your individual interests are quite diversified and I am preparing literature “packages” for each of you.
However I have identified one common need for all of you. I believe you need to select pretty quickly a viable subject of your PhD thesis. My impression is that many, if not all of you have not identified such viable subject, yet.
Here there is a striking similarity with most crucial issue in entrepreneurship, namely the opportunity identification or alternatively identification of a viable business idea. It is a very important phase in launching new business. Focusing on a business which cannot fly is a waste of time and money and the risk of failure is pretty high. It seems obvious that this applies to non-viable PhD subjects, as well.
What I would like to suggest for the next session 5 March is to apply the entrepreneurship theory of opportunity identification to the selection of a viable PhD subjects. Here I do not want to go into details of your theses but focus on the selection process which results in the identification of a viable PhD subject. Obviously, starting new business is something different than writing PhD thesis so that we need to demonstrate creativity in applying entrepreneurship theory here.
On 5 March I will make an introductory presentation expecting vivid discussion on that fascinating subject. As a preparation kindly read relevant portions of my textbook (Bloc 3.1 unfortunately in Polish). You may also look in the English textbooks in the ALK library. Additional selected articles have been sent by e-mail.
PROGRAM FOR THE NEXT WORKSHOP 26 march 2011
1. Think of the important issues which still need to be discussed regarding writing a PhD and send me an e-mail. Copy it to other PhD students so they are alerted. We maydevote some time to those issues on 26 .03.2011.
2. Update your field of interest, if necessary, by 10 March 2011. Based on that I will prepare individual “literature packages” for each of you by 12 March.
3. Kindly prepare short presentations - approx. 20 minutes on most important issues derived from the literature . PPT slides welcome.
4. My idea is that all of you will make such short presentations during two workshops 26.03 and 2.04. John has already agreed to be the first on 26.03. I need 4 additional volunteers for 26.03. If not I will make a random selection.
